Cucuron: A Quiet Village in Provence’s Luberon Region

The Provencal Village of Cucuron

Provence is a region overflowing with charming village after charming village, and with each trip to Provence, I find new villages to fall in love with.

In our most recent 2025 June trip to Provence, we finally made it to the village of Cucuron in Provence’s Luberon region. I was instantly enamored with Cucuron’s overall atmosphere, and we spent an evening wandering through Cucuron’s peaceful, seemingly empty streets.

Is Cucuron worth visiting?

Although quite small and quiet, Cucuron one of the Luberon’s most beautiful villages and is worth visiting, especially if you are staying in the more popular nearby village of Lourmarin.

If you’re in Provence, you’re likely seeking slower days, soft warm breezes and the sound of cicadas, and Cucuron is a wonderful village to take your time in.

As is true in most of the Provencal villages, there’s not very much to do in Cucuron, but if you’re looking for a village to retreat in, decompress in, write a book in or simply be in, Cucuron is the place to be.

This Cucuron post will be less of a travel guide and more of a visual guide. The reason being is that 1) we didn’t stay in Cucuron or spend too long strolling through, so I can’t create a true “travel guide” and 2) because there isn’t all that much to do in Cucuron other than to enjoy the idyllic setting.

what to see in cucuron

Despite not having much to offer in terms of sights to see and things to do, there are a few spots in Cucuron worth checking out during your wanderings of the village. Below is a shortlist of highlights to see in Cucuron that can help guide your explorations of the village.

Bassin de l'étang

Unique to the village of Cucuron is the Bassin de l'étang. This large basin was originally a pond used to supply the flour mills in Cucuron, and now sits as a tranquil central water feature to the village.

The Bassin de l'étang is lined with large trees and is a central place in the village to eat ice cream, grab a bite to eat and enjoy the soft bustling of other visitors and locals.

During our time in Cucuron, we grabbed ice cream from La Glacière - Cucuron and before leaving Cucuron ate dinner from the pizza truck on the edge of the bassin, Vintage Pizza Cucuron.

This would be a great spot to eat dinner if you have toddlers or children, as they can sort of run around the basin in car-free freedom while you enjoy your meal.

Other restaurants you can find along the Bassin de l'étang (all with outdoor seating) are:

  • Le 20 Gourmet: a French restaurant with burgers, steak and frits and other classic French foods. They offer a kids menu.

  • KIYO SUSHI: For when you’re craving sushi at some point in your trip.

  • Ô Cailles: A French brasserie with a small menu of French dishes. Kids menu available.

  • Bistrot La Relève: French bistrot with a fixed menu option available.

  • La Petite Maison de Cucuron: A highly rated, French gastronomic dining experience in a charming courtyard setting.

Cucuron Tuesday Market (Marché de Cucuron)

Every Tuesday from around 8AM to 1PM, Cucuron hosts its weekly Provencal market, with stalls dotted around the Bassin de l'étang.

We haven’t personally been lucky enough to visit on market day, but weekly Provencal markets are a mark of the region and I highly recommend visiting on a Tuesday morning if it works in your Provencal itinerary.

Le Donjon Saint Michel de Cucuron

In order to get the best views of Cucuron, you’ll want to climb to Le Donjon Saint Michel de Cucuron, a dilapidated building that was once a castle and is now a historical monument.

You can enter a portion of Le Donjon Saint Michel de Cucuron, dependent on whether or not there is a temporary exhibition happening during your visit. From inside the small remains, you have wonderful views over Cucuron.

Even if Le Donjon Saint Michel de Cucuron is closed during your visit to Cucuron, you can still take in the views by climbing up the hill that Le Donjon Saint Michel de Cucuron sits on to take in the breathtaking views.

Porte & Tour de l'Horloge ou Beffroi

Continue your self guided walking tour of Cucuron by walking through the Porte & Tour de l'Horloge ou Beffroi, a former Revelin Gate, which formed the main entrance in the 13th-century rampart of Cucuron (historical information from Cucuron.fr’s website).

There isn’t anything to do here other than walk through the arch, admire the tower and clock and continue to be amazed that such small villages in France can carry so much history.

Église Notre-Dame de Beaulieu

My favorite discovery during our time in Cucuron was Église Notre-Dame de Beaulieu. Provencal churches all leave me breathless and this one didn’t fail to do the same.

Within the church, you can admire the Provencal tiles, baptistry and soft sunlight coming through these compact, religious spaces.

wander through cucuron’s quiet streets

A pastime of any trip to Provence is simply getting lost in a Provencal village’s streets and admiring the facades, doors and character unique to each village.

Cucuron is overflowing with these charming streets, so simply enjoy walking through them and taking deep breaths imagining a much slower, quieter, peaceful way of life.

how much time to see cucuron

As are most Provencal villages in the Luberon, Cucuron is very small and compact and can be easily walked in a short amount of time. If you aren’t using Cucuron as a home base and just visit from another Provencal village or as a pit-stop on your Provencal road trip, you could easily visit Cucuron in a couple of hours.

We personally spent a few hours one evening walking through Cucuron’s streets and grabbing dinner.
