eguisheim, France

Eguisheim is a small medieval Alsatian wine village, hugged on all sides by rolling vineyards, sitting roughly 40-minutes driving south of Strasbourg and 18-minutes driving south of Colmar.

Eguisheim’s medieval village is laid out in a circular format made up of a large number of colorful, half-timbered houses. This combination, plus its wine-focus, makes Eguisheim a unique and charming French village in the heart of Alsace, France.

is the eguisheim christmas market worth visiting?

Eguisheim is one of the villages that Belle’s village from Disney’s Beauty and the Beast is said to modeled after, and from the moment you arrive in Eguisheim, you can see why.

There are a few fountains in the center of the village that you’ll recognize as similar to the one in the opening scene of Beauty and the Beast, and you’ll found yourself strolling the streets of Eguisheim singing and imagining the locals throwing open their shutters and singing, “Bonjour! Bonjour! Bonjour, Bonjour, Bonjour!”

Christmas markets or not, this feeling alone makes Eguisheim a French village worth visiting. Add in the magic of possible snow and a charming village Christmas market and Eguisheim climbs to the top of your must-see Alsatian Christmas markets list.

If you are a wine-lover, the village is literally lined with wine shops, selling the famous Alsatian wines grown in the hills all around the village. While dining in Eguisheim, you will find really affordable (some as cheap as 3 euros) glasses of wine on the menu at the local restaurants, which come in the traditional, green-stemmed Alsatian wine glasses of the region.

Eguisheim was my favorite Alsatian village we visited, simply based on its charm. We greatly enjoyed just wandering through the narrow half-timber house lined streets and popping into the local boutiques.

what to expect from the eguisheim christmas market

The Christmas market in Eguisheim is substantially smaller than the markets in Strasbourg or Colmar, but what it lacks in size it makes up for in charm.

There are two small Christmas markets in the center of the village, with roughly 30 stalls selling handmade crafts to shop and vin chaud to drink (in a plastic cup, unlike at the German Christmas markets, in France you will not receive your mulled wine in an actual mug).

You can easily see the Eguisheim Christmas market in a half-day. We drove from Strasbourg to Eguisheim and spent around five hours in the village, which gave us time to see the Eguisheim Christmas markets, walk the perimeter of the village to take in the beautiful half-timbered houses, and grab a bite to eat at a local restaurant (we had a delicious cozy meal at
Caveau Heuhaus).

The dates for the Eguisheim Christmas Market are from 28 November to 30 December 2025.
