We’ve had the absolute joy of hosting Thanksgiving abroad for the past four years. These Thanksgivings are always a stress-free opportunity for creative play, and I’ve loved trying to create lovely settings for our growing guest list (usually around 25+ people).

This year, I wanted to go full on dark and moody, and during my inspirational research spotted the trending grape tablescapes. Instead of spending a ton of money on live or faux garland or greenery, you can simply buy a plethora of grapes and other fresh fruit and create a playful centerpiece for your holiday table.

Although this tablescape was created for Thanksgiving, it could easily work for a Christmas Tablescape, a Galentine’s tablescape or even a wedding.

As this was not a formal event and instead a for fun event, we used plastic cups, cutlery and plates. I have collected the candelabras over the years (the large ones are from the Paris antique markets) and added in some pillar candles this year for fullness.

Items used in this holiday tablescape

  • Grapes: purchased from our local grocery store. We purchased around 7 packages, but you would need more if you want them to run the entire length of your table (depending how long your table is).

  • Other Fresh Fruit: We used pomegranates, pears (that are darker in color), and passion fruit (which are brown on the exterior). We let our guests take fruit home as a party favor!

  • Plastic dining plates with gold rim: very helpful if you’re hosting a large group like we do and you don’t have a dish set that serves 26 people.

  • Drinking goblets: I wanted something fancier than regular plastic cups, but didn’t really want traditional wine glasses as we would have a lot of children present. Also goblets just felt to match the grape theme.

  • Plastic cutlery: I couldn’t find gold cutlery in a large set in the Netherlands, but linked is a gold set available on the US Amazon that would match the plastic plates and elevate your table.

  • Thick disposable napkins: You can fold your napkins or roll them with ribbon and greenery to make them feel fancier

  • White linen tablecloths: Ours are from H&M and I’ve had these all four years and they get stained of course, but they really elevate the dining experience and aren’t too hard to clean.

  • Candle sticks: Collected over the years - can easily find them at thrift stores in the US.

  • Pillar candles: The candles are where you can really change the mood of the tablescape. My husband didn’t want ours too dark and moody, so we went with light pink to pull from the red of the grapes. We didn’t end up lighting the pillar candles as we didn’t need the extra light and didn’t want the fire hazard.

  • Dried florals: If you know you’re planning to create a tablescape in the near future, simply purchase some fresh flowers that will dry well (baby’s breath, eucalyptus, hydrangeas, etc) and let them dry out before hand.
